All of us have experienced the same problem, regarding the size of a file, at least once or twice. When you need to burn multiple files to a disk, one of the files may be too large to fit among the others and it would be a shame to leave so much unoccupied space on that CD. SplitFile, as the name clearly suggests, will split single files in multiple parts, which can fit mostly anywhere. The software places a rich set of controls at your disposal, allowing you to decide how many parts to create and how small.

Downloading the application will take a few seconds, because its setup file is only 175 Kb large. The installation process is just as fast and it can be performed on most Windows versions. There are no advanced configurations to make along the way, so anyone, including beginners, can install this program.

SplitFile's main window is very small and it contains exactly what you need. Besides a few options for accessing a simple configurations menu, the "About..." or "Register" menus, you can find two large buttons, which bring up different windows, where you may split or join files. If you want to split a file, you will obviously need to specify its path on the hard drive, as well as a destination folder.

You may click different radio buttons to select a pre-defined size. Each radio button is labeled according to various storage devices, from floppy discs to HD DVDs. It is also possible to specify a size manually, in bytes or any other unit, up to terabytes. Before hitting the large Split button, in the lower right corner of the window, you may tick a few options to create merge files, for Windows or Unix.

Joining files is an easier procedure. It is done on a different window, where you need to select the first fragment of a split file. You may tick an option to delete the fragments automatically, once the joining is complete or make a few other simple configurations. When everything is ready, you only need to click a button and the process will begin immediately. Alternatively, you can perform the same process by running the join file, if you created one. This makes it possible to join your files immediately, even if they are on a different computer, on which SplitFile is not installed.

Pros

You can split files by selecting a pre-defined size or typing a new size yourself. A joining feature is available as well, but you may also join them by running a file. In this way, you will not have to install SplitFile on other computers, if your intention is to transport large amounts of data.

Cons

Although it is specified that SplitFile is donationware (it is free, but you can make a donation), you will find the words "30 day trial" on the interface's title bar, which is a bit confusing. Simplicity and efficiency are the main advantages of SplitFile. It lets you split a file, regardless of size, into multiple pieces, of any size you want.
